Ambulance (2022)

Plot summary of Ambulance (2022)

The movie begins in Los Angeles, where military veteran Will Sharp struggles to contact medical insurance agents in a desperate attempt to secure funds for experimental cancer surgery for his wife Amy. Faced with a lack of assistance and limited options, as well as the burden of caring for their newborn, Will discreetly meets with his adopted brother Danny, a legendary bank robber, under the disguise of a job interview. At Danny's residence, surrounded by a fleet of stolen cars and his crew, Will confesses his desperate situation to Danny. Recognizing Will's desperation, Danny promises to include him in a theft planned for the same day.

Meanwhile, Cam Thompson, a paramedic, and her new partner Scott attend to a vehicle accident in the city. They come to a disturbing scene at the accident site, where a little girl called Lindsey is impaled by a fence post. Cam's calm demeanor helps to calm Lindsey as they work together to release her from the entanglement. Later, over lunch, Scott informs Cam of Lindsey's expected recovery, but Cam remains unconcerned, revealing her tendency to approach her job without developing emotional attachments. Scott notices the rumors about Cam's unrivaled abilities as a medic, as well as her seeming isolation as her coworkers refuse to cooperate with her.

Will joins Danny's gang as they approach the bank for the robbery. Simultaneously, officers Zach and Mark head to the bank, with Zach having a crush on one of the tellers and seeking an opportunity to ask her out. Mark encourages Zach to go for it. However, upon arriving, they discover that Danny and his team have already initiated a hostage situation, holding employees at gunpoint. Despite Will's attempts to dissuade Zach, he insists on entering the bank, pretending to be there to open an account. Zach asks Danny, who is pretending to be the bank manager, the teller’s name, and he gives him a fake one.

When Zach arrives at the teller's window, he notices her full name and senses something is wrong. Danny quickly pulls his gun out and has his guys draw theirs and force Zach to play it cool so that they can get what they want and flee. Outside the bank, Mark unwittingly aids one of the crew members with a stalled truck, oblivious to the criminal plot. As the crew's cover is blown, the criminal attempts to run Mark over, but he narrowly evades the danger. Exiting the bank with Zach as a hostage, Will and Danny find themselves in the midst of a gunfight between the remaining crew members and the police.

Unfortunately, Danny's guys are all killed. Zach attempts desperately to fight off Danny, and amid the chaos, Will is forced to shoot Zach. They start to run out and leave Zach there, but Mark manages to find him. Cam and Scott are dispatched to the area to help. Cam and Scott are called in to help, but after they bring Zach in, Danny forces Scott to get out and has Will take his uniform so that they can steal the ambulance. With Danny in the back, he coerces Cam at gunpoint to comply with his instructions. They start to drive away and are blocked off by a squad of cop cars, but Cam is able to send them away after they find that Zach is being treated in the ambulance.

Meanwhile, other cops discover Scott unconscious, revealing that Will and Danny hijacked the ambulance. This worsens the situation, causing law enforcement officials, notably SIS Captain Monroe, to intervene. In addition, FBI Agent Anson Clark, who specializes in bank robberies, arrives on the scene. He informs Monroe that he knows Danny is behind the robbery, and he even has a personal history with Danny and knows that his criminal father led him into that life. Monroe stresses the need for caution due to Zach's presence in the ambulance.

Will stops the ambulance in an alley as they realize that police helicopters are now looking for them. Cam attempts to escape, but Danny apprehends her and forces her back inside. Danny calls another criminal called Castro to prepare for their arrival in Boyle Heights. Additionally, he communicates with crime boss Papi, who had previously worked with Danny's father. In response, the local gangsters gear up a car fitted with a machine gun. Meanwhile, Cam tries to keep Zach stable and seeks Danny's help with the defibrillator. As Zach's condition worsens, Cam faces challenges in controlling the bleeding, prompting her to reach out to her ex-boyfriend, Colin, who is a doctor.

Colin and two other doctors coach Cam via a video conversation, and Will joins in the effort. They are forced to dig through Zach’s stomach and try to remove the bullets. At one point, Zach wakes up and starts freaking out, causing Will to punch him and knock him out. When Cam tries to remove the bullet from Zach’s spleen, it ruptures and has to be pinched down with Cam’s hair clip. They manage to keep the bleeding under control. Monroe gets in touch with Colin, who tells him that the video feed cut out just as Zach’s spleen ruptures. Believing Zach to be dead, Monroe orders snipers to position themselves, anticipating the ambulance's passage.

However, Cam successfully reaches out to FBI Agent Clark, affirming that Zach is still alive. Spotting the snipers, Cam warns Will and Danny, who, through skillful maneuvers, manage to evade the ambush. Despite taking hits, the ambulance outpaces the pursuit, causing other police cars to crash in their attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle. As tensions escalate between Danny and Cam, Danny decides they no longer need her and attempts to shoot her. In an effort to diffuse the situation, Will tries to keep Danny calm by playing music, but the gesture proves ineffective.

Meanwhile, Cam learns more about Will's personal life when Amy, Will's wife, phones and video-chats with him, believing he has won the job he pretended to interview for. The trio drives the ambulance to the Los Angeles River, where Danny opens fire on a helicopter before Will speeds away. Upon reaching their destination, Castro begins spray-painting the ambulance, while SIS Captain Monroe and his team prepare to confront them. The criminals retaliate by sending the machine gun car into the police crowd, firing upon all of them and killing Monroe.

Roberto, Papi's son, deploys another ambulance equipped with explosives, inflicting even more damage. In the middle of the pandemonium, Mark sees Roberto and chases him, and after a struggle, he causes Roberto to shoot himself in the head, which Papi witnesses on the news. Will and Danny take the ambulance to Papi's place to deliver his half of the loot. Enraged by his son's killing, Papi seeks further vengeance from the brothers and urges them to leave Cam and Zach behind. Refusing to comply, Will and Danny decide to take matters into their own hands and kill Papi and his guys.

Meanwhile, Zach, recognizing the gravity of the situation, hands over his gun to Cam for protection. Will rushes back to the ambulance in a panic, and Cam accidentally shoots him in the process. Danny finds Will injured and believes it is the work of another thug. Danny directs the ambulance towards a hospital, determined to find treatment, but their path is stopped by a police barricade. Agent Clark attempts to bargain with Danny, pleading with him to surrender. Danny finds out that Cam shot Will and attempts to bring her out at gunpoint, knowing he is going to die anyway, and plans to take her with him. Just as he steps out with Cam, a gunshot rings out.

Danny has been shot through the back by Will. Will is then pulled out of the ambulance and lies beside Danny, who, in his last moments, expresses remorse and apologizes before succumbing to his injuries. Amy arrives on the scene and becomes hysterical when she sees Will. Despite Cam being held back, she does what she can to help Will survive. As Will had instructed, she carefully hid part of the stolen money in the baby's car seat. Will has been taken into custody and is being watched at the hospital. Amy watches from the window with their baby, and Will manages to wave at them.

When another police question Zach about the gunman, he points to Will, acknowledging him as the one who saved his life. Cam enters Lindsey's room and holds her hand as she awakens. Later, as night sets, Cam exits the hospital, bringing this intense and dramatic series of events to an end.
